According to Chinese legends, before Buddha departed from earth, twelve animals came in their devotion to see him. Buddha honored them by naming the years after them in the order they arrived, creating a zodiac cycle that, thereafter, was used to tell time and provide direction.

Like those who believe in the power of the astrological zodiac, Asians believe that people born in the same animal year share a similar personality and character. For example, people born in the Year of the Horse are cheerful, skillful with money, and quick thinkers. Social contact is important to "horse personalities," and they often form close relationships with others and will give up anything for a good romance.

2002 was the Chinese Year of the Horse. As a way of commemorating that date, Trail of Painted Ponies artist Lori Musil, who paints and draws the West like no one else, was asked to create a “Year of the Horse”Painted Pony. Her extraordinary design honors ten of the American horsebreeds: the Quarterhorse, Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Paint, Mustang, Morgan, Clydesdale, Tennessee Walker, American Show Horse... and even a Grand Canyon donkey.
